Ministry vs. Business:

Reframing the “Hard” Work

Many pastors hesitate to embrace bivocational ministry because they believe it’s simply too hard. But I’m here to tell you, you’re already doing the hard part.

Let’s be honest, ministry is hard work. The endless sermons, hospital visits, Bible studies, fundraising efforts, and meetings can be draining. You pour your heart and soul into your congregation, often with little tangible reward. Despite your best efforts, growth can be slow, and discouragement is a constant companion. This. Is. Hard.

In comparison, starting a business can be surprisingly manageable. In my experience, the initial heavy lifting typically requires about one day a week, maybe increasing to three days as things get rolling. But within six months, most small ventures find their rhythm.

I’ve walked both paths, and I can confidently say that the challenges of ministry often dwarf those of entrepreneurship.

So, if you’re feeling overwhelmed by the prospect of starting a business, remember this: you’re already equipped to handle “hard.”

Your action point for this week:

  • Carve out four hours to work on your business idea. This can be split into two two-hour blocks if needed.
  • No business idea yet? No problem! Spend those four hours exploring possibilities. Read a book, listen to a podcast, brainstorm, and let the ideas flow.

You’ve got this!
